Who doesn’t recognize the name Versace? This brand has been a symbol of opulence and luxury for over thirty years. I remember my bestie and I pouring over the amazing Versace magazine ads in the early 2000’s depicting the lavish lifestyle of two ladies who lunched, lounged and wore furs. We were studying fashion merchandising and dreaming of being in a world filled with glamour and beautiful clothes.
This year for my birthday, my husband and I were able to get reservations at the restaurant in the late designer’s home on South Beach. The mansion is called the Villa Casa Casuarina and was the private home of Gianni Versace in years past. It was built in 1930 and bought by Versace in 1997 for $2.95 million. In 1997 he was killed on the front steps of the mansion and it has been a landmark every since. In 2009, it was turned into a boutique hotel and restaurant. Admittedly, I was curious to go in and have a look around the mansion(who wouldn’t!), but one can only enter as a patron of the establishment. So……..I became a patron.
We were pleasantly surprised that the food and service were top notch. We shared the Montecarlo Bigaro which was a large salad with fresh mozzarella and crab meat and I had the Gnocchi Di Granchio. The gnocchi was the best I EVER had! It was dressed with truffles and crab meat…..how can that go wrong!?
Overall, the night was luxurious, the food was good, the ambiance was divine. I kind of felt like I could have been in one of those old ads……… And, yes, I had to snap some selfies in the bathroom. Hello, it was Versace’s bathroom!
Have you been to Villa Casa Casuarina? How did you like it?
